Virtual Runs: What They’re About & How to Get Involved

Completing a 5K or Triathlon can be a rewarding and exhilarating experience. However, that feeling can be challenging to chase if there are little to no public racing events in your area. For this reason, virtual runs are becoming a popular option for athletes throughout North America. And with a little help from Virtual Run Canada, you can find and participate in your dream virtual race too.

What Does Virtual Racing Entail?

When we say virtual run or virtual race, you might imagine a virtual reality or video game. However, this isn’t what we are talking about. Our definition of a virtual run is consistent with the type of activity and advantages of traditional races. However, virtual runs eliminate the physical interaction component while allowing more time to prepare and perfect your running techniques.

The Primary Differences Between Virtual and Traditional Running

  • Whom You’re Running With - Traditional races can get pretty crowded, and you’ll likely rub elbows with dozens, if not hundreds, of other athletes. If you are trying to stay healthy and socially distant, though, you’ll want to avoid such a setting altogether. Instead, try entering a virtual race that allows you to run on your own or with a few friends while competing with hundreds of others across the state.
  • Where You Choose to Race - Normal races have designated paths for athletes to follow. With virtual running, though, you can choose which route you take. If you have a favorite running spot, track or treadmill you’d prefer to use, you have the freedom to do so!
  • What Time You Start to Run - Traditionally, in-person races take place in one day, but a virtual race can occur over a couple of weeks. This gives you and other athletes plenty of time to prepare for your run so that you can beat your best personal scores. Also, you get to pick your own race time, avoiding poor weather conditions that sometimes postpone traditional races.
  • More Racing Options In Your Area - When it comes to in-person racing, location can sometimes limit your participation. However, because virtual runs can occur pretty much anywhere with wifi, you can choose whichever race best aligns with your interests. If you have a particular theme or specific cause you are passionate about, we can happily point you toward an expansive selection of races across the country.
